It is estimated that 80% of Americans will complain about back pain at some point in their life. Back pain can be caused by a number of factors including: pinched nerves, herniated or degenerative discs, osteoarthritis, muscular problems, and fractures. The initial treatment usually includes rest, ice/heat, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, and possibly muscle relaxants and physical therapy. Most patients get better with conservative treatments, and only a small percentage requires surgery. Even with disc herniations about 90% of patients will get better without surgery.
